Hemingway meets CognitiveCombine II
After my last Hemingway theme modification for WordPress, I have once again created a new version, called Hemingway meets CognitiveCombine II.
This theme is based on a 'brown coffee' colour scheme. Being a dark theme it is easy on the eyes, however I don't think it is suited for any business oriented blogs. It should however do quite nicely for personal or perhaps art oriented sites.
Demo: CognitiveCombine Theme Previews (use the drop down menu)
Update 11 June 2008:
Apologies, but I do not currently have the time to offer support. Commenting on this post is temporarily closed. Please try to obtain support at the WordPress forums.

Is there any way to put a sidebar on the right side? that can have a widget?
June 27th, 2007 - 21:19
The easiest way to add a widget would be to use the existing dynamic-sidebar by adding a block to it. The block could then contain anything you like, including widgets.

WHen I try to add the blog roll i keep getting a database error is that a problem with the template or with my setup possibly?
June 30th, 2007 - 11:40
Bertram:
Please go to the blocks folder and open blogroll.php, change the value 1 to ID, save and upload, the blogroll should work then.
Thanks for pointing it out.

How do you add a block into the Dynamic-sidebar? What is the code to do that?
Many Thanks!

I just installed this theme and there isn’t a blogroll.php to change the value for…a little help?
September 28th, 2007 - 10:31
There should be a folder called blocks. Inside it should be the file blogroll.php

Hello, Is it possible to have a french version of your theme ?
thanks a lot.
September 30th, 2007 - 00:22
Hi,
I am sorry but I don’t speak French, if you do, then you can send me the English/French translation and I can add the French text to the theme when I have some time.
October 2nd, 2007 - 17:57
Just curious if it is WP 2.3 compatible? (ps thanks for the great theme).
October 2nd, 2007 - 22:57
Not yet actually. I will try to update all my themes soon.
October 31st, 2007 - 01:23
hello there. Im just new to wordpress, and running your lovely theme, but i seem unable to open any of my blog posts beyond the taster that is given on the home page, the first 100 words or so. When i click “read on” it just seems to refresh the same page, with none of the rest of the text… puzzling..
October 31st, 2007 - 23:10
Hi, could you please link to an example so I can have a look at it?
November 1st, 2007 - 22:13
I am trying to add ‘pages’ on my site, but they aren’t showing up. I just want to add more categories that aren’t posts, but rather permanent information?
Thanks
November 1st, 2007 - 23:50
You have to activate the dynamic sidebar box to show pages.
November 7th, 2007 - 23:15
Just installed your theme. Does it allow widgets? Doesn’t look like it. How might I ad widget functionality? thx
November 14th, 2007 - 12:04
You have to add the widget code to functions.php as well as the page you want it on, either index.php or sidebar.php etc..

I just tried to change my theme to the “Hemingway” one, and when I open my home page, I get this error message: Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /homepages/19/d94565993/htdocs/erika/wp-content/themes/hemingway-meets-cognitivecombine-ii-101/index.php on line 15
HELP!
December 11th, 2007 - 23:15
With regards to the dynamic sidebar… sorry to be dense but HOW do you activate it? thanks in advance… great themes!!
December 11th, 2007 - 23:35
David,
There should be an options page for the theme where you can configure the sidebar contents.
December 11th, 2007 - 23:38
Erika,
I do not have any issues with that theme. What version of wordpress are you using?
December 12th, 2007 - 04:51
re: adding sidebar. there is nothing about a sidebar in the options page and the widgets page says this theme is not configured for sidebars. WordPress support forums seem to suggest i find a different theme WITH a sidebar. before i do, because i really like this theme… am i missing something or is this more trouble than it’s worth for a non-coder?
December 12th, 2007 - 11:08
David,
I will have a look at it later on today, I am sure that there should be an options tab for this theme where you can modify the sidebar.
Try looking under Presentation for Hemingway Options.

Hello CognitiveCombine – I looked for a simple and clearly arranged blog. And I think yours is pretty good.
I’m using the one column style (only one post on the left site in the block). Is there a possibility to get a picture next to the first post on the right site? I can’t find the correct place in the index.php or nowhere else. Can you give me a hint how to realise this.
Cheers

Can I add a photo to the front page? That is, can I add a photo just under the search bar on the right side of the page?
P.S. You said that your theme is not appropriate for businesses only personal websites or art sites. I am an organic farmer and I think it compliments the soil, the ground from which vegetables grow.

This theme looks great in firefox, but the second post drops down in IE instead of being side by side. Any fixes? Here’s the site:

Thanks!

Hi There,
Really like the theme. I came across a php error when adding this to my themes:
Parse Error: syntax error, unexpected $end in C:\Program Files\wamp\www\blog\wp-content\themes\hemingway-meets-cognitivecombine-ii-101\functions.php on line 647It was caused by the php code starting with <? in a few cases rather than only using <?php
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Ian

I fixed it using a combination of your theme with the Dawn theme by Milo.
February 19th, 2008 - 13:53
Michele and Ian,
Thanks to the both of you for the feedback.

I absolultly adore this theme, my problem is that it seems to keep disappearing.
I’ll go to my blog, and it will be empty. I’ll go to the admin page, and no theme will be selected. But then I can select this one, and go back to a functioning blog.
This has only happened twice, so I don’t know if it’s my install of wordpress or the theme, but I thought I’d post this here just in case.
March 4th, 2008 - 22:23
Hello Melanie,
Sounds like a problem with your set up. Also make sure you downloaded this theme from the official source which is themes.wordpress.net
March 12th, 2008 - 17:24
Hey, I love your theme, I’ve customized it a bit, nothing too big. Are you planning an update? If so may I suggest widget and google advertising support. I’ve added them myself by adding code and blocks but a more user friendly interface would be great.
Thanks for the great theme
March 12th, 2008 - 21:08
Thank you for the compliments Josh. I am not planning an update any time soon as I am quite busy at the moment, but I do plan on adding some more user friendliness to some of my themes in the future.
March 27th, 2008 - 15:24
This theme is perfect! There’s just one little thing: it seems all visitors are allowed access to my metadata. There’s an ‘edit this entry’ link beneath every one of my posts! I noticed no one else has had this problem, so I’ve probably done something wrong. Is there a way I can change my settings to fix this?
Thanks!
March 27th, 2008 - 23:21
Dave,
Only you can see the ‘Edit’ link when you are logged in. If you logout, you won’t be able to see that link.
I just went to your site and could not see the ‘Edit’ link. This is normal.
March 28th, 2008 - 18:23
Right you are. I could have sworn it appeared when I wasn’t logged in, but I guess not. Thanks for your help. I’d highly recommend this theme to non-bloggers and artists. I’ve tried several other themes but all of them had design flaws or quirks. Yours works great.
March 28th, 2008 - 18:43
Thank you Dave, actually some of my themes need some cleaning up and fine tuning, I just haven’t had the time.
April 7th, 2008 - 20:38
Thank you so much for the terrific theme. It’s working great for my purposes. I’m having one small problem, though. The audio plug in that I use only works on the individual pages, not on the index page. Is the index missing a bit of code required to run it that the page template has?
Thanks again for your work.
April 8th, 2008 - 08:56
J,
I am not familiar with the audio plug-in that you use. Perhaps check the settings of the plug-in.
Did it display on the frontpage in other themes?

Hi,
I have several things i need to consult about, will be asking 2 at a time.
1) comments font is a bit too dark — where in the css file do i modify it?
2) search box: my input isn’t being cleared from the box, even after i refresh the page.
Thank you! Great template.
andrew
April 8th, 2008 - 15:55
p.s. with regard to the search box: now that i tried it again, it works fine now! so, please disregard my complaint #2 (in fact, the box is not cleared on refresh, which is fine with me, as long as it is empty when i navigate away from my search results.)

April 8th, 2008 - 16:00
p.ps. search box again
crazy as it seems, i still find a bit of a problem with it: say, i got the results and i want to make another input (new search) right there. in firefox the procedure is cumbersome: even to clear that box isn’t easy.
thanks!

April 9th, 2008 - 00:00
it did display the in the index page with any other theme (except for the original Hemingway, which I tried, just to test). The settings for the plugin seem fine. i’ll look through the code and see what i can find.
April 9th, 2008 - 15:36
1) i’ve checked your site with firefox — same searchbox behavior problem (not sure: is that the original Hemingway you are using? anyway, that’s exactly the template i am gonna use)
2) where in css do i change comments font color?
thank you!
April 9th, 2008 - 15:49
oops, my bad: didn’t see whose thread this was! my apology.
that’s another issue, btw:
3) i’d love to be able to use Brian’s Threaded Comments plugin with this template. (They are not compatible at present, but perhaps there might be a chance to be able to adjust the code?)

Hi there,
today I also was searching for a way to include widgets, which basically means a sidebar, into hemingway meets cognitive combine I. This is how I got it to work: use the “theme-editor” to edit functions.php and add
at the very end. Then create a new text file called e.g. sidebar.php with the following content
and upload it to your “blocks” folder on your server.
Go back into your wp-admin and choose “hemingway options”. Beneath the bottom bar you should now have the possibility to give a new name to this new block element. After you’ve done that you should be able to drag and drop the sidebar block element into the bottom bar. In the “widets” configuration you now can include content into your new sidebar element.
Greetings,
Tom

I think you need to wrap the code tags with < code> < /code>

I just switched to this theme following my WordPress 2.5 upgrade. Now it seems my RSS feed is broken- none of my new posts are going out. Any ideas?

Still waiting for RSS feed help…
