Trapped girls call for help on Facebook
You are lost in a stormwater drain and cannot find your way out. You have your cell phone with you. Do you call emergency services for help? No, it's 2009, so you update your Facebook status and hope one of your friends is online and happens to see your status message at the time.
According to ABC News this is exactly what two girls, aged 10 and 12, did in Adelaide. Instead of calling for help, they updated their Facebook status messages.
Only 2 days ago, there was an article on the Telegraph, about a psychologist named Dr. Tracy Alloway who claims (rather questionably) that her research has shown "Facebook to enhance intelligence" while "Twitter diminishes it".
Seriously?
When internet users start to mix up the internet with reality, and when their order of priorities goes first from the internet and only then to reality, one has to worry about the destiny of humanity, no matter what social network is used.
These children could be the leaders of tomorrow, aren't you worried? I am.
I can imagine the following future scenario:
"Citizens of Klingonistan watched in utter surprise, shock and horror, as Dirkastani air force jets bombed their city on the morning of Wednesday, 9th September 2050. National news reported no prior warnings or threats had been issued by Dirkastan.
Klingonian president Tar Kral: "In full breach of international law Dirkastan did not issue a Tweet of War prior to their attack. We will take this matter to the Security Council.
Unnamed sources say Dirkastani generals, unfamiliar with Twitter, failed to press 'Submit' after having carefully crafted their 140 character declaration of war."
