Have you purchased eBooks from ebooks.com before? Are they legit?
I have never purchased ebooks before, usually I buy books from Amazon. But since this is the holiday period, and I needed some books for a paper I am writing, I decided to try buying ebooks. Update.
A fellow Ubuntu user over at ubutuforums.org mentioned a website called www.ebooks.com
I decided to give it a try. I created an account and bought an ebook.
Based on the instructions on the site, I also had to install Adobe Digital Editions, Adobe's e-content manager application.
The installation went fine, and I proceeded to download an *.acsm file from ebooks.com. This is an xml file, with a licence key and a link to the pdf. Adobe Digital Editions is supposed to use this file to download your purchased content.
Here is where the problems started. Adobe Digital Editions is unable to download the pdf I purchased and here is the error message:
So now I am worried that this may not be a legitimate seller.
Has anyone purchased anything from ebooks.com before? Are they legitimate?
I am currently in contact with their tech support to see what the issue is. Adobe has informed the problem is server-side.
Update 2009.12.30
It has been a couple days since I ordered my very first ebook from eBooks.com.
Yet I am still unable to download or use the book due to problems with eBooks.com servers.
In the mean time I have purchased a traditional paper version of the book and have asked eBooks.com for a cancellation of the order and a refund of my money.
I must say I am quite annoyed that I have been charged for the ebook even though I have not been able to download it. eBooks.com has not delieverd the service they claim to offer but have seen fit to take my money.
Nice.
Update 2009.12.31
I requested a cancellation of my order and a refund since the technical problems were still not solved after 5 days.
eBooks.com has agreed to refund my money.
I am still not sure what the problem was unfortunately, but this was my first experience purchasing any e-books and unfortunately it was a rather negative one.

I attempted to purchase 3 ebooks. “Authorization dealyed…It can take minutes, but often it takes about an hour”.
Sent a message to “contact ebooks” two hours later. No response now 5 days later and no bank charge, but I’ll have to check now and again to make sure they don’t try to make that charge. They have no phone number or email for contact. You have to “contact ebooks” which probably does nothing after you submit.
On top of the “black hole” of their customer service, I have now found my ebooks somewhere else and each one is cheaper.

Thank you for the feedback Robert.
It seems they have some issues to sort out.
