LaCie Network Space Backup Feature is Awful!!
The LaCie Network Space is a nice entry level NAS, but it is way too dumbed down, the backup feature is extremely annoying and here's why.The other day I went out and bought a 1TB LaCie Starck hard disk (usb hdd). I wanted to backup the contents of my LaCie Network Space (NAS).
I plugged the usb hdd into my NAS and then logged into the NAS web administration page and started the backup feature.
You won't believe this, but it took 3 and half damn days to copy 360GB from the NAS to the directly connected usb hdd!
This in itself is terrible and I have no idea why it took so long, but the stink doesn't end there.
The backup feature is so simple that it only does cummulative backups. Everytime you click on "backup", it copies the entire contents to any attached media.
This is great if you have limitless storage, but I don't, and I doubt most other users do, which is why it would have been great if the NAS also offered recursive backups.
But no, that would be too convenient for the user.
I am not the only user who is annoyed and frustrated about this, others have complained about this issue too.
Don't get me wrong, I do know that cummulative backups are better because recursive backups are fragile, if only one link in the backup chain is messed up you lose all your recursive backups.
But its 2009 and offering the user some degree of choice and flexibility is really a minimum requirement.
My only option now is to try and install rsync on the NAS using the backdoor method and use it to make recursive backups to the usb hdd I bought.
What on earth was LaCie thinking!?

Did you have any success installing rsync on the device? Or did you find any other elegant backup solution for the Network Space ?
Facing the same challenge here.

Hi JayEl,
Yes, I was able to install rsync and I made a successful backup which was much faster than the built in feature. With rsync it took me about 8-9 hours.
But, exactly one day after I made the backup, the Network Space locked up on me and is not an elegant brick.
I have no idea what caused it to brick at this point.
But if you would like to give it a try, here is the tutorial I followed:

(I don’t use Windows, so I ignored step 3)
