LaCie Network Space: unable to upgrade firmware through OSX

If you bought your LaCie Network Space (NS from now on) about half a year ago, you may or may not be aware that there is a new firmware update. The upgrade was not as easy as I expected.I downloaded firmware version 1.1.8 from here. And proceeded to follow these rather simple instructions.

But I kept getting an error and it was really frustrating.

Screen shot 2009-12-13 at Sunday 13 December 2009 - 5.45.59 PM

As you can see from the error message, after starting the update process, the NAS does not reboot into update mode, and the error is displayed. I tried this countless times and always this error appeared.

Quite by chance I then got it to work, by closing this window right after the NAS went down for reboot:

lna

This window is the culprit which prevents the NS from rebooting into update mode. The problem is one of logic:

1. you have to launch LaCie Network Assistent

2. In LNA you have to click on "update"

3. This opens a new window that enables you to start the update process

4. But the first window remains open and lists the NS.

5. When the NS tries to reboot, this first window starts to look for the NS to list it (as shown in the picture) and this prevents the NS from going into update mode.

So make sure to close this window right before you start the update process!

Good luck and hopefully someone can confirm this solution as well.

  1. Hi there! I came across your blog via your link to my website grumbling about the NetworkSpace.

I had numerous issues also trying to update the firmware (from Windows) with the same error. I even contact LaCie, whose advice was initially “try doing it again”, which of course I had tried. I followed your steps above and it worked a treat. The one thing to be careful of on Windows is that the NetworkSpace admin tool also shows an icon in the system tray. Firstly I waited for the device to reboot then shut down the app completely. This update failed.

I then repeated the process, running a ping against the NetworkSpace. As soon as the pings failed and I heard the device shutdown, I just closed the window, leaving the NetworkSpace app running, and a few minutes later, the update was successful. Thanks for the info!

  2. Worked a treat. Don’t know yet if it’s sorted my AFP not connecting, but I have been trying to update this for months with no luck! Thanks very much.

  3. Thnx! Works like a charm.. stupid software

it is a shame that you had to find out yourselves!
thank god you posted this solution
    thx a mill!

  6. Just tried the above, I now get further than before but it gets stuck on stage 3 of 3, but it never seem to finish and I end up pulling the power on the device.

    Anyone got anyideas?

  7. HI Dan,

Make sure it is not opening up any windows in the background (behind any window you are currently viewing), I had that happen a couple of time. That’s all I can think of at the moment.
