Physicist Smuggles Explosives through Full Body Scanner

A physicist has demonstrated how easy it is to smuggle explosives past a full body scanner.

During a talk show called "Markus Lanz" on the German channel ZDF, physicist Werner Gruber managed to smuggle several dangerous objects and materials through a full body scanner (the type being hailed as a must for all airports), among them, a lighter, a fuse and Thermite, a material that burns at 3-4000 degrees Celsius.

The video is in German, but you don't need to speak German to understand what's going on here. The physicist is asked to walk through the scanner, a technician analyzes the images and is asked if he saw anything suspicious, he notices Gruber's cell phone and talk-show microphone, but nothing else.

Gruber then proceeds to take objects out of his clothes and mouth and explains what they are. Then they all go outside of the studio and Gruber ignites the Thermite using all the objects he was carrying with him and demonstrates what Thermite can do to a metal pan, and thereby also theoretically to an aircraft if detonated/ignited in the right place and at the right time.

  1. Fantastic article. These scanners have less to do with our protection and more to do with our control.
