Sockso: Music Streaming to Anywhere

An open source music server that works with Windows, Mac and Linux.

Sockso is designed to be extremely user-friendly. There is no installation process, beyond extracting the archive and running the file inside. When you run it for the first time, you select the folder your media resides in, whether your files are in MP3, OGG Vorbis, Flac or WMA format. Once Sockso is up and running, you'll need to open a port in your firewall for it in order to access it outside your network (which Gina explains here).

After scanning your media and making sure the firewall has an open port, all your interactions with Sockso take place through the web-based interface. You can browse your collection, make playlists, download your music to pass on, and get a breakdown of your music by more recently played/popular, and so on. You can even set up accounts for your friends and accept uploads if they've got music to share with you. Sockso is an open-source media server with versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Free Music Archive: Royalty-free Music

An archive of royalty-free music, free for download and use.

Inspired by the ideas and ethos behind Creative Commons licensing, the tracks on the FMA are offered for whatever use you want. Use them to soundtrack your latest YouTube epic, remix them and release them, or download and share them with friends. The site also boasts a kind of quality control to the database of songs both live and recoded, selected by WFMU's audio archivists and curators. The search functionality works pretty well, and can be re-sorted by genre, album, or other criteria.

Yusuf’s Cafe

Recently I watched the Yusuf's Cafe Session DVD which contains Yusuf Islam's live performance at Porchester Hall in London as well as an interview by the BBC's Alan Yentob. The interview was for me the most interesting bit.

It is amazing, again and again, to see how Yusuf Islam has evolved since his days as the popstar Cat Stevens. An aura of humility and calmness surrounds him now. He appears to be in tune with his life and surroundings, quite different from the searching Cat of old. No longer is he on the path to find out. He has found what he was looking for.

If you too are a fan of Yusuf Islam make sure to get a copy of this DVD, you will not regret it. The live performance of his newly released songs (the album is called An Other Cup) proves that his talents have not diminished despite a lengthy break from the music industry that spans some 28 years.

He always seems to come to the rescue, in the 1960's his songs captured the mood and questions of that era, today, once again, his songs bear so much relevance to life's issues.

Jamendo: Free Music for Free People

I would like to draw your attention to the world of free music, music that can be downloaded and shared without worries. Some months ago, fellow Ubuntu users pointed out jamendo.com, a platform that enables artists to promote their work under a Creative Commons licence, I like to think of it as open source music.

While the music at Jamendo is freely downloadable, you have the option to donate money to artists of your choice should you want to support them, it is however not a requirement to listen to or download the music.

One nice feature is an online music player that allows you to preview albums in full length, you can browse through all the artists and albums on the site. If you find something you would like to have you can then proceed to download it.

The genres available range from jazz, to electronica, ambient, techno, pop, classical and much more. Depending on your taste you may find refreshingly good music by artists who make a real effort as opposed to greedy and arrogant stars who have made their billions through massive marketing machines that depict their regurgitated amoebic half-tunes as being Godsends.

Lets have the goodies, here are some of my favourites:

Artist: Grace Valhalla
Album: Peak
