Ubuntu 9.10: network-manager – openvpn – “vpn service failed to start”

So this is quite frustrating:
Background:
In Ubuntu 9.04 I had a VPN connection configured in order to use Witopia. It worked.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 and now it doesn't work.
Problem:
In Network Manager, under VPN Connections, when I select my "openvpn" connection I get this error message:
The vpn connection 'openvpn' failed because the VPN service failed to start.
More Info:
Here is what it says in Sys Log:

What I have tried so far:
Reading through the forum, and searching Google, it seems many people are having this problem. It also doesn't appear to be a new problem.
I tried to remove openvpn and network-manage-openvpn packages and to add them again and to create new connection profiles.
Unfortunately without success.

Any ideas

?

Ubuntu: Reinstall all your packages in one go

Many of us go through a short, or long, routine of installing our favourite packages after a reinstallation, or upgrade.

If you have many packages installed, you might have created lists to keep track of them.

VirtualBox: Multiple Users Sharing One Virtual Machine (Guest OS)

Today I needed to allow multiple user accounts in Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) to access one virtual machine, a guest installation of XP (using Virtualbox). Here are the steps necessary:

 • Move the hidden .Virtualbox folder from your user folder to somewhere more accessible, for example /home/.VirtualBox
 • Change the Group for the .VirtualBox folder to vboxusers and set Read and Write permissions (do this for all included files and folders)
 • Then paste this command (modify it to suit your folder locations and names) in to the terminal: ln -s /home/.VirtualBox ~/.VirtualBox
 • Add all the users that will be using Virtualbox to the vboxusers Group
 • Reboot (important)

Once you have done this, log in to each of your user accounts in Ubuntu and run through the VirtualBox set up procedure but always point to the same .vdi file that you placed in /home/.VirtualBox

You should now be able to access the same guest OS from any Ubuntu user account on the same machine.

ubuntu The computer department of the University of Vienna has launched a service, called u:book, to offer several laptop models at reduced prices to its students.

Three brands are available; Lenovo, HP and Apple. Excluding the Apple laptops which come with MacOSX, the other two brands are being offered with a choice of either Windows Vista or Ubuntu 7.10 as the operating system.

The first window of opportunity to purchase laptops will start on the 25th of February and end on the 23rd of March 2008.

A round up of the past couple days

As you may, or may not, have noticed, I have not been posting here very much lately. Currently I am working on a new theme for CognitiveCombine.com, a completely new design approach and something I have not tried before. I hope to finish it by this weekend, I am still trying to iron out some cross-browser issues.

While looking at the site stats, it appears that 'What you can do in Linux that you can’t in Windows or Mac' has received a lot of attention as well as some fair criticism. I agree that some of the items in the list may seem to be repetitions with slight variations and I am also aware that some claims concerning Mac OSX may be incorrect. I would be more than happy to amend the post if corrections are posted.

Another interesting development, The Pirate Bay has selected my Hemingway meets CognitiveCombine I theme for their court-blog and so traffic has increased significantly. I'm honoured to see one my early works selected for such a high profile site and at the same time a little ashamed, being such a novice theme it is unclean and perhaps not really a work one could be proud of.

That's all for now,
Cheers.
